Multivitamins taken by millions of ‘worried well’ are a waste of money and may be doing more harm than good, an expert has said. Brian Ratcliffe, a former government adviser on nutrition, accused the £600million-a-year vitamin pill industry of preying on the fears and finances of people who are essentially healthy.

Manufacturers said Government figures show that three-quarters of adults fail to eat five helpings of fruit and vegetables a day and many lack key vitamins and minerals.Dr Carrie Ruxton, of the industry backed Health Supplements Information Service, said: ‘Supplements are a useful means of boosting vitamin and mineral intakes while people are gradually improving their diets  -  this process takes time.’

Hmm ...
Siapa yang benar-benar memerlukan multivitamin?

Ratcliffe kata ... However, some may benefit from specific supplements, including the elderly, who can be low in vitamin D, and pregnant women, who are advised to take folic acid.

Multivitamin untuk wanita hamil:

Multivitamins containing folic acid appear to be more effective at preventing neural tube defects than high dose folic acid supplements, suggests a new study, attempting to resolve the debate over how women should consume the essential nutrient. It concludes that multivitamins should contain between 0.4 - 0.8 mg of folic acid for pregnant women to prevent neural tube defects and some other congenital abnormalities.

Recent research in this area has debated whether the use of folic acid alone or folic acid-containing multivitamins is better. Researchers have also questioned whether a high dose of folic acid (eg 5mg) might be more effective than a daily multivitamin with low dose (0.4 - 0.8 mg) folic acid.

In a paper published in the International Journal of Medical Sciences, Professor Andrew E. Czeizel, receiver of the 2002 award of the US National Council on Folic Acid for Excellence in Research in the Field of Folic Acid and Birth Defects Prevention, compares two intervention trials and a case-control surveillance of congenital abnormalities that involve very large population.
The pooled findings of these trials indicate that approximately 92 per cent of neural tube defects may be prevented by supplemented multivitamins containing 0.8 mg of folic acid.

Vitamins are essential for growth, vitality, health, general wellness, and for boosting the immune system against many health problems and diseases. There are mainly two kinds of vitamins, that is water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble are absorbed by the intestine and carried through the bloodstream, and have to be taken in daily, as they cannot be stored by the body. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the body, and need not be taken daily. While most humans require the same amount of vitamins; men, women, and children need different amounts to lead a healthy life. Recommended vitamins are measured through different ways: milligrams (mg), micrograms (mcg) 1,000 mcg = 1 mg, and International Units (IU).
